Inspired by my last post, my dear mother has decided to do as much research as possible on the PCT to calm her nerves about my disappearing into the wilderness for five months. Because of all the information she's been feeding me during the past few days, I figured I should start on some more in-depth research on different aspects of the hike. Today's topics: Campo, CA and the ADZPCTKO.
Campo, CA is the location of the official southern terminus of the trail, and where most thru-hikers (people planning on hiking the entire 2,650 miles of the trail in one shot) begin their adventure. It is a bustling town of 3,251 in San Diego County, on the border with Mexico. The town is known for some thrilling tourist destinations, such as the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum, the Motor Transport Museum, and the Gaskill Brothers Stone Store. Campo is also close to the location of the ADZPCTKO, which occurs at nearby Lake Morena County Park.
The Annual Day Zero Pacific Crest Trail Kick Off, or ADZPCTKO, is a several-day long get-together of past, current, and potential hikers. People gather, make friends, eat food, compare gear, and share hiking tips. Many thru-hikers begin their hike shortly after the ADZPCTKO. As it happens in mid-April, we hope to attend right before starting our hike.
Stay tuned for more educational topics in preparation for our big adventure.....
